Worlds Biggest Transfer Fee Losses

Postby The GFP » June 16th, 2012, 9:16 pm

Just my own list of players that clubs have paid a fortune for that were an absolute disaster :

Player : Jô (João Alves de Assis Silva)
Date : 31st September 2008
Clubs : CSKA Moscow (Russia) to Manchester City
Bought For : £18.0m a week wages
Sold For : £0 to Internacional in Brazil (July 2011)
Loss : £18.0m

When the Abu Dhabi billionaires bought Man City they spent money on buying any player that would give the club prestige so they bought Jô for £18m and he was a disaster scoring only 1 goal in 21 Premier League games and 6 goals in 38 games in all competitions.

He went on loan to Everton (Twice) & Galatasaray (Turkey) before going on a free transfer back home to play for Internacional in Brazil in 2011.

*****************************************************************************************************************

Player : Robinho (Robson de Souza)
Date : 1st September 2008
Clubs : Real Madrid (Spain) to Manchester City
Bought For : £32.5m + £160,000 a week wages
Sold For : £15m to AC Milan (Italy) (August 2010)
Loss : £17.5m

Manchester City were desperate to prove they were now a giant club after being taken over by the Abu Dhabi billionaires and were after a world class player so they bought Robinho for £32.5m from Real Madrid on the final day of the English Premier League summer transfer window (the same day the Abu Dhabi group bought the club).

In that first season Robinho scored 14 goals in 31 Premier League games but the next season scored 0 goals in 10 games and was loaned out to his old club Santos in Brazil in January 2010. When Robinho returned to Manchester City it was clear he wanted to go and after 14 goals in 41 Premier League games and 16 goals in 53 games in all competitions he was sold to AC Milan in August 2010 for £15m.

*****************************************************************************************************************

Player : Craig Bellamy
Date : 18th January 2009
Clubs : West Ham United to Manchester City
Bought For : £14m + £95,000 a week wages
Sold For : £0 to Liverpool (August 2011)
Loss : £14m

Mark Hughes had managed Craig when he was Wales manager so when Manchester City needed a goal scorer he bought Craig for £14m in January 2009 from West Ham United.

Mark Hughes was sacked in December 2009 so although Craig scored 12 goals in 40 Premier League games and 15 goals in 51 games overall he was not needed by the new manager so was sent out on loan to Craigs home town club Cardiff City for the 2009/10 and was released by Manchester City at the end of the 2010/11 season and joined Liverpool for free.

*****************************************************************************************************************

Player : Shaun Wright-Phillips
Date : 17th July 2005
Clubs : Manchester City to Chelsea
Bought For : £21m + £60,000 a week wages
Sold For : £8.5m
Loss : £12.5m

After winning the Premier League in 2004/05 Chelsea spent £21m on England & Manchester City winger Shaun to score goals like he did with Manchester City (he scored 10 goals in 34 games in the previous season) but in 2005/06 although Chelsea won the Premier League again he failed to score a single league goal in 27 games.

Things did not improve much for Shaun at Chelsea and in his three seasons with Chelsea he only scored 4 goals in 81 Premier League games, Shaun did manage 10 goals in 124 games in all competitions but this was way below the standard that Chelsea had expected so Shaun was sold back to Manchester City for £8.5m in August 2008.
